about

17 is Dust Cwaine’s EP follow up to their debut album Arcana.

17 follows in the nostalgic vein of Arcana, playing as a spiritual second act. These songs touch on parts of Dust’s inner world that reflect on their experience growing up closeted in a small town. Lyrical themes throughout speak to the power of trans bodies, Love, and the skillful avoidance of vulnerability. Josh Eastman’s production brings a 80’s inspired indie rock flare that highlights the glimpse back that the lyrics offer.

The EP lead single, Seventeen is an 80’s prom core indie rock ballad that yearns for rites of passage and love lost. Lyrically, Seventeen is raw and honest, which pairs achingly with Eastman’s tender energetic production that features a soaring soulful synth piano, making us long for the ache of teen love.

The EP was art directed by Cole Schmidt and reclaims high school jock culture and twists it into a queer shape. The imagery places Dust inside an approachable familiar world wrot with loneliness, Separation and inspiration. The images and video use nostalgia to point out joy that accompanies the pain of growing up.

From Dust on the Album:
“I never got to be Seventeen at least not in the pined after, rite of passage kinda way. I was lost in the closet in a small town in 2007, role models were underground and my desire to be loved burned a hole in my spirit. It’s something I think about in relationships now, how different would I be had I not been fat and gay in secret for so long? We all have things that inspire our inner children. These songs touch on the parts of my inner world that explore ruminations on body, growing up, love, transness and the skillful avoidance of vulnerability.”
